The character classification in Gothic II is a little bit different from that of part one. Even though the player assigns his character to a class like in the prequel, the decision whether he is able to learn magic or not is made through the guild-choice. The choice of the guild furthermore decides on career and the player's friends. If he joins the militia of Khorinis, for example, he has the rank of a militiaman at first. If the character has gathered enough experience points and achieved the favor of influential people, he may become a knight and even a paladin at the end of the game.
A list of all characters of Gothic II ordered by guilds follows:

Militia/Paladins

Militia
Knight
Most militia can be met within the city wall of Khorinis and only citizens of the town are allowed to join them. Their task is to impose the law and order and practice for a possible orc attack in their barracks. But the militia also likes to raid the nearby farms which want to secede from the town. The paladins are the vassals of Innos and are controlled directly by the king, who sent them to Khorinis with the order to retrieve as much magic ore as possible from the valley of mines. Paladins are very skilled at melee combat, but they also have the privilege to obtain special paladin runes, which heal them or help them in battle against Beliar's servants.

Mercenary/Dragon hunter

Mercenary
Dragon hunter
The mercenaries work for the landowner Onar and protect his yard from the militia and collect the farm lease from the smaller farms. Mercenaries are quite strong fighters, who aren't averse to a little brawl. You can gain respect from many of them if you manage to beat them in a duel. The dragon hunters are quite good fighters as well but they're also huge swanks. These men came from the mountains to fight the dragons. However they aim for gold and fame for the most part. Dragon hunters don't give a damn about magic, they rather trust in real weapons as swords or bows.

Novice/Fire mage

Novice
Mage
Rich people can join Innos' monastery for a donation of 1000 gold coins and a sheep. Every new member starts out as a novice and has to help the mages of the monastery by carrying out duties for the community. Only a few of the novices pass the test of fire and become fire mages. As such mage you have the possibility to create powerful runes which damage your enemies or affect them in some other way, summon creatures or heal you. As a priest of Innos you also enjoy a very high reputation in the town.
